Push Not the River is based on a Polish Countess' diary in the late 1700s. Anna Maria was born into Polands Noble class and reached adulthood during the time of the French Revolution. It was fascinating to read how the French's peasant uprising effected the rest of Europe.
About the plot...The book is long, but you don't notice because it is packed with action. This is one book where you can't guess what will happen next. I'm dying to read the actual diary to see how closely the author stayed to Anna Maria and her family's true story. If he did, Amazing!
As for the characters...I'm fascinated by the similarities/contrasts of Anna Maria and her cousin. Anna Maria is so selfless and good, Zophia is selfish and crude to the extreme. But it is Zophia's selfish and crudeness that saves Anna Maria's life several times.
Do I recommend.... Oh, yes - Read this book if you enjoy historical fiction, and epic stories like Gone with the Wind, Doctor Zhivago or The Thornbirds.
