Me vs. the TV

Soren and Lucas love to start their day by snuggling with me while watching cartoons. Every day, Soren insists on RescueBots while Lucas demands "Trucks! Trucks!" Which means he wants to watch his favorite truck show "All About Monster Trucks."

We've taken turns being sick these last couple weeks, which means we've spent a lot of time cuddling on the couch and watching RescueBots and Trucks - not just in the morning.

I have this internal struggle with tv watching. I've spent a lot of time since becoming a mother worrying about letting my kids watch too much T.V. And I've decided that my worry isn't helping anyone. It doesn't make me a better mother. It doesn't give my kids more attention and love. It doesn't help with peace in the home.

So I'm kind of over it.

But on sick days/weeks, when we have the tv on for hours at a time,  I still hear that guilty nagging in the back of my mind.

I heard it again today in the middle of Monsters Inc, our third movie of the day (cause I'm sick). Then I looked and saw Soren resting his head on my lap and Leo resting his head on Soren. Lucas was laying down on my feet, completely relaxed.

Life felt good. And I reminded that little nagging voice that I am a good mom. My children are loved and safe. They run and play and jump and dream. The success of me as a mother isn't determined by how much tv they watch.

You probably get the TV guilt from me, which I got from my Mom. So more power to you if you can break that cycle of guilt! It looks like you are getting a good perspective about the whole thing. You are a good Mom.

So true! YOu are a wonderful mother, but there are times when we do things to help us get through what is going on with our lives. Poor Lily had TV as her only company when I was pregnant with Derek and too sick to even move, and although I felt the nagging guilt too, it was what helped us both survive a difficult time :).
